Tabernaemontana sananho — Not Tabernaemontana undulata
The name Sananga can refer to preparations associated with different plants within the Tabernaemontana genus, and understanding this distinction is important.
The well-known Becchete associated with the Matsés people is traditionally prepared using roots of T
Tabernaemontana undulata.
This Katukina preparation is different.
It is prepared using Tabernaemontana sananho, an Amazonian species associated with traditional Sananga preparations in Brazil.
Both plants belong to the Tabernaemontana genus and have histories of traditional Indigenous use, but they should not be treated as botanically identical preparations.
Traditional Amazonian Context
Sananga and related botanical preparations have a long history within Indigenous Amazonian traditions.
Ethnobotanical accounts describe Tabernaemontana preparations in connection with hunting practices. Within these traditions, the plants have been associated with waimatai—strong or enhanced vision/perception considered valuable to hunters in the rainforest.
Accounts also distinguish Matsés Becchete prepared from T. undulata from Brazilian Indigenous preparations associated with T. sananho.
These descriptions reflect traditional Indigenous practices and beliefs and should not be interpreted as established medical claims.
Made by the Katukina People
This Sananga comes directly from Brazil and is prepared by members of the Katukina people, maintaining a direct connection to the Indigenous communities and Amazonian traditions from which the preparation originates.
The Shaman Store works to offer traditional Amazonian botanical products with respect for their origins and the communities who continue to preserve this knowledge.
Small-Batch Indigenous Preparation
Many of the traditional products offered by The Shaman Store are handcrafted in small batches by Indigenous communities of the Amazon.
Knowledge surrounding the selection and preparation of forest plants has been carried through generations, with individual peoples maintaining their own methods, botanical knowledge and traditions.
Plants may be gathered and prepared through processes involving drying, grinding, filtering or extraction depending on the particular preparation and community.
Because these are small-batch traditional botanical preparations rather than industrially standardized products, natural variations between batches may occur.
Fresh Brazilian Sananga
Freshness matters with liquid botanical preparations.
This listing is for one (1) fresh 10 mL bottle of Katukina Sananga from Brazil.
Storage — Keep Refrigerated
KEEP REFRIGERATED.
To help preserve the freshness and botanical integrity of this traditional small-batch preparation, keep refrigerated with the container tightly closed.
For optimal botanical quality, we recommend using or retaining the preparation for no longer than 6 months after opening.
Natural variations in color, clarity and sediment are normal with handcrafted botanical preparations. Discard if significant changes in appearance, odor or container integrity are observed.
